This volume, Aggression and Hostility against Women on Social Media Platforms, brings together a myriad of studies that investigate how gendered violence, hatred, and discrimination against women are linguistically constructed and challenged in some of the most relevant social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, or X. More precisely, the chapters that comprise this volume explore the linguistic and technological processes through which women become the targets of aggression online with a particular focus on women in public life (i.e., politicians and media personalities), women who are survivors of sexual violence, victims of femicide, trans women, and women positioned at the intersections of gender with race, migration, sexuality, and body norms. Drawing on approaches such as Critical Discourse Analysis, Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis, Sociopragmatics, Corpus Linguistics, and combining qualitative discourse-based approaches with computational methods, the different contributions reveal a wide range of phenomena, including verbal aggression and hate speech towards women, victim-blaming practices together with the online framing of femicide, image-based sexual abuse, and public disclosures of sexual violence. All these practices offer a nuanced picture of how aggression against women is articulated from a linguistic point of view, legitimized, and, sometimes, challenged across these media platforms. In addition, the contributions in this volume demonstrate that online hostility and aggression toward women should be viewed as part of a broader continuum of gender-based violence in which already existing systems of patriarchy, misogyny, transmisogyny, fatphobia, and rape culture are reinforced and perpetuated. Finally, these contributions also highlight the need to address how the affordances of social media platforms become instrumental in the ongoing struggle against gender-based violence.
